Learn about April Banks's work.
Originally trained as an architect, April Banks is an L.A.-based artist whose career spans conceptual art, social practice, and exhibition design.
In these images, Banks mixes photographs of the slave-trading posts of Saint-Louis and Gorée Island, Senegal, by French colonial photographer Pierre Tacher from the early 1900s with her own architectural studies of the same places from over a century later. The results are new and often haunting visions of archival photographs of Africans by a white European photographer.
