Artist Hans Holbein and lawyer Bonifacius Amerbach together devised a provocative portrait that captures Amerbach’s erudition and Holbein’s portrait skills. Amerbach’s expressive features are juxtaposed with an epigram (witty saying) that he composed himself, in which the likeness attests to its own accuracy. Whether words or images best represented a person’s character was a subject of lively debate in the Renaissance. Enjoy this portrait at the Getty Center through January, 9, 2022, as part of the exhibition “Holbein: Capturing Character in the Renaissance.” . . . 🏷 #GettyMuseum #GettyCenter #LosAngeles #SoCal #Museum #ArtHistory #Exhibition #ThingsToDo #GermanArt #Portraiture #Artist #Holbein #OnView
