Have you ever seen a palace this big? This is City Palace, overlooking the banks of Lake Pichola in Udaipur in northwest India. It took over 400 years to build and is actually a series of 11 granite and marble palaces that represent different moments in the region’s history and many architectural styles. Over 20 generations of the Mewar Dynasty have been custodians of the complex, protecting its many wall paintings, dazzling silver and glasswork, gardens, courtyards and more - what they deem its ‘living heritage.’ It is also the most popular tourist spot in the region, where visitors can learn its history at its museum, discover its many rooms and features, or simply relax and enjoy the lakefront views from one of its balconies. Getty supported the complex through two grants to develop a conservation plan for the site’s architecture.
