What happens when artworks made centuries apart are brought together? "In Dialogue" is a new series of installations that features modern and contemporary photographs in conversation with historical paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. Reframing how we see both past and new works, the series explores key themes that continue to resonate today. To launch the series, photographs by five women from Japan, Mexico, and the United States encounter European artworks created before 1900, predominantly by men. Among the featured artists is photographer Deana Lawson. Lawson's portrait of a family gathered in their living room at Christmas, the youngest son grinning at something beyond the frame, recalls a casual family snapshot. But "Coulson Family" is carefully choreographed: Lawson used props and posed her sitters in an effort to, as she says, "insert my singular dream vision within something that’s very real."
