For this year's visual_aids Day Without Art, we highlight the pioneering work of the American photographer, Joan E. Biren, also known as JEB. Her work has focused on authentic depictions of lesbians and raising awareness of queer women artists through a compelling slide show presentation titled "Lesbian Images in Photography: 1850–the present." Biren delivered this presentation in cities across the US and Canada between 1979 and 1985. By the late 1980s, she began to document prominent demonstrations of queer visibility and HIV/AIDS activism in Washington, D.C. In 1987 she photographed men with AIDS who participated in the second national march on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The following year, she documented ACT UP's blockade of the Federal Drug Administration's building, which became one of the group's most significant demonstrations as it yielded national media coverage and effectively shut down the organization for the day.
