Located along a busy trade route between India and China, this island has a rich cultural history. Through migration and colonization, Malays, Chinese, Indians, Thais, Eurasians, Brits, and others have shaped much about the city—including its unique architecture, renowned cuisine, and diverse ethnic neighborhoods. In 2008, George Town was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list. However, its historic neighborhoods are under threat from rampant urbanization in adjacent "buffer zones" between the historic districts and new development.
