What is a landscape? In the exhibition "The Expanded Landscape," contemporary artists expand the definition of a landscape beyond the natural scenery. Whether offering the beauty of abstraction or creating a surreal composition, photographers engage with the idea of how humans impact the landscape around them. This first image is part of a series called "The Country Between Us." Virginia Beahan and Laura McPhee captured the rolling hills in the eastern part of Washington state, called the Palouse, with a large-format camera. The land is volcanic dust, but also fertile farmland. Beahan and McPhee intentionally omitted the sky to remove a sense of stability and balance to disorient the viewer. Let's have a look at the second image. At first, you may think these formations are neon blue icebergs, but they're granite outcroppings coming out of the Oregon Coast water.
