This is the 900-year-old Wupatki Pueblo that once housed as many as 100 residents. It is the heart of the Wupatki National Monument in Northern Arizona (swipe to see more of Wupatki). Many Northern Arizona American Indian communities view the Wupatki village as continuously inhabited by their ancestors. Wupatki was home to the ancestors of the Hopi, Zuni, Navajo, Yavapai, Havasupai, Hualapai, and several bands of Apache and Paiute, the Wupatki landscape holds a precious record of migration, trade, and other practices dating back to the 11th century. Today, this sacred site is at risk due to floods and other natural disasters, and the extreme weather from climate change has only accelerated deterioration and damage to the structures. But good news—Getty is granting $1.3 million to the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design to work with the National Park Service on a conservation plan for the site so it can face these climate challenges.
