César Chávez, too weakened to speak as he ended a hunger strike in March 1968, issued a statement admonishing, "It is how we use our lives that determines what kind of men we are." With sunlight glinting off his camera lens, photographer William James Warren caught Chávez and Robert Kennedy in prayer. Behind Kennedy is Filipino American labor leader Larry Itliong, who organized the first grape strike in 1965, and persuaded Chávez to join him, marking the first time Filipino and Latino farmworkers fought together to secure better wages and working conditions.
