On this day in 1888, Vincent van Gogh sent a letter and handful of drawings (including this one) to his brother Theo while living in southern France. In the letter, Van Gogh shared with his brother that the warm and colorful climate inspired him and that composing drawings allowed him to articulate his ideas better. Van Gogh wished he was more productive, despite making over 50 works in just a few months. In the drawing, the artist used short parallel lines and dashes to capture a wheat harvest outside the city of Arles, France, which we see rising in the distance.
