Roy Lichtenstein first explored brushstrokes as a subject in a series of paintings begun in 1965. Brushstrokes became one of the artist's most recognizable motifs, and he regularly painted them for more than 30 years. It wasn't until the early 1980s that Lichtenstein created three-dimensional brushstrokes, like the sculpture seen here.
Lichtenstein was a leading figure in the pop art movement. He drew inspiration from comic books and brought this bold style into the world of fine art.
