Meet the Muses: Euterpe.
Euterpe, muse of music and song, stands at the far right of this fragmentary Roman sarcophagus. She holds a pair of tibiae, or pipes, one in each hand. Euterpe wears a sleeved tunic, or chiton, trimmed with tassels at the hem, and a short mantle wraps around her shoulders. The ends of her mantle are tucked up into an elaborate belt. Euterpe's name suggests the delight she brings to those who hear her play.
