This is the SalkInstitute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. It sits on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. With a stream of water flowing down the middle of the plaza and the ocean breeze, the site is a meditative, serene place to carry out important medical research. Dr. Jonas Salk—the developer of the polio vaccine—wished to create a collaborative and innovative environment for researchers. In 1965, the Salk Institute was completed by architect Louis I. Kahn. Two nearly identical wings mirror each other on either side of a central plaza. The entire complex was built with a harmonious palette of materials including concrete, teak, glass, travertine, lead, and steel. The building is considered an iconic work of modern architecture, and turned 50 in 2015.
