Is it the figures dancing in a circle, or those sitting on a hill watching? Perhaps it's the animals playing, bathing, and coexisting amongst the humans? Or maybe it's the robed figures flying in the sky, holding a banner that reads Bel' Anni Del Oro?
Jacopo Zucchi made this highly finished compositional study, or modello, for the small-scale painting The Golden Age, now in the uffizigalleries in Florence, Italy. It depicts the first of the four ages of the world as described in classical mythology, which was a period of happiness and prosperity.
The Golden Age was a favored metaphor of the Florentine Medici family when talking about their governance of the city. Zucchi worked for the family throughout his career during the late sixteenth century.
