The L.A. Graffiti Black Book, also known as the Getty Black Book, is now available! This unique book, nearly 10 years in the making, was a collaborative project featuring 143 original artworks by L.A.–based graffiti artists. The project is based on a 17th-century tradition. Students would pass around a type of autograph book known as a liber amicorum (Latin for “book of friends”) and decorate it with calligraphy, signatures, poetry, and coats of arms. The new book reproduces each page from the original. This modern take on the book of friends brought together 151 artists, some of whom visited Getty’s archives to take inspiration from Renaissance sketches of Leonardo da Vinci, Arabic calligraphy, and even real examples of libri amicorum.
