What do all these objects have in common? These are all Soviet-era household items made of plastic. A new project launched today in partnership with @dieneuesammlung, @th_koeln, and @wendemuseum aims to study these everyday items to better understand how plastic production and design were shaped behind the Iron Curtain. Why study plastic? Whether it is plastic-based art or other culturally important everyday objects made of plastic, all plastic is at risk of shrinking, distorting, and even disintegrating. East Germany became one of the leading plastics-producing nations in the 1960s, shortly after the Berlin Wall split the country in two. East German plastic products were shipped to almost all countries of the Eastern Bloc, and even to the West via secret channels.
