peter_brathwaite has 90 artwork re-creations under his belt that he's created at home since the start of the pandemic for his "Rediscovering Black Portraiture" series. We invited him to take on the #gettymuseumchallenge with some artworks in our collection. This re-creation is of an Ethiopian manuscript created around 1505. It shows the Evangelist John bending over his writing table to write his Gospel. Ethiopia was one of the earliest centers of Christianity. In about 324, King Ezana of Aksum, located in the region of northern Ethiopia and Eritrea, converted to Christianity. Over the next millennium, this region developed its own branch of Orthodoxy with icons, processional crosses, and illuminated manuscripts playing a key role in religious services. The tools of the scribe (quills and a knife to “erase” or scrape away mistakes from the parchment) seem to hover over the green field above John’s parchment page.
