The house's unconventional style reflects the boundary-pushing vision of its architect, Konstantin Melnikov, who created the home as a model of efficient and economical design. Though never adopted by the state as a template for mass housing, Melnikov used the home as his studio and family residence. The house is built as two intersecting cylinders, with large open rooms that require no interior load-bearing walls, allowing for large, unobstructed rooms and maximum use of open space.
