Peek into the treasured family albums of Edward Weston, the innovative 20th-century Californian photographer. While he is best known for his modernist pictures of peppers, shells, sand dunes, and nudes, these albums show a very different side of Weston as an artist and as a man. Edward’s first wife, Flora Chandler Weston, began compiling photographs by him and others into albums by 1907. We have seven of these albums here at the Getty. One album records the thrilling early days of their courtship, including a camping adventure along the San Gabriel River. Three of the albums serve as baby books devoted to the Westons’ sons: Chandler, Brett, and Cole, following their lives from birth through adolescence. Others feature snapshots from beach days, dogs, and even a shirtless Edward flexing for the camera. These unique treasures give us insight into Flora Weston as the family archivist, Edward Weston’s first years as a photographer, and their family’s life in Southern California. . ...
