Eero Saarinen was the architect, and Alexander Girard designed the interior spaces. This division of labor, by itself, was a novel approach that became synonymous with modern living. What makes this design modern? ✔️an open layout ✔️a sunken pit in the living room ✔️a seemingly continuous couch ✔️glass and steel walls ✔️floor to ceiling window panels ✔️blocks of gridded skylights These all signal a departure from traditional architecture. The spaces are meant to be expansive and bright. Note how the red "conversation pit" contrasts with the white living quarters. Girard was really ahead of the times. The house was constructed for modern architecture fans J. Irwin and Xenia Simmons Miller, and later donated to the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
