This month’s #ConnectingCollections theme is storage and we’re looking at how this ancient vessel is thoughtfully stored.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Dan Manns, preparator at the Getty Villa, has been systematically designing and building new storage boxes for objects in the collection over the last few years. Every storage box is custom designed and built to meet the specific safety and handling needs for each object. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ While artifacts are in storage, it’s important they have protection from dust and any possible fluctuations in temperature and humidity. They also require support and protection against earthquakes, as the Getty Museum is located in a seismically active area.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ This storage box contains an Etruscan bucchero ceramic chalice dating to 550 BC. Bucchero is a type of dark burnished ceramic that was produced in central Italy.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The chalice’s storage box is made of blue corrugated board, Ethafoam, and Tyvek.
