This month's #ConnectingCollections theme is Connecting People, Past and Present. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ We’ll be looking at two mummy portraits that are part of Getty's APPEAR (Ancient Panel Painting: Examination, Analysis, and Research) Project. The project’s database investigates ancient panel paintings — including Romano-Egyptian mummy portraits — to better understand their materials, the artists behind the portraits, and the process by which they were made. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Thanks to these portraits from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd centuries, we can meet face to face with the people who lived in Egypt under the Roman Empire and learn more about them. The hairstyles, clothing, and other attributes of the men, women, and children portrayed give us clues as to when they lived and to their social status.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Let’s meet Isidora, the lady in one of the Getty’s mummy portraits. Isidora’s elegant clothing and jewelry, and the gilded adornments on her portrait, suggest that she was a woman of high rank and wealth. We were...
