Today we look at Green, which symbolizes Nature. “Aurore Dudevant, better known by her male nom de plume (pen name) George Sand, was one of the most prolific authors of 19th-century France and had a rebellious reputation. She flouted traditional gender conventions by dressing in men’s clothing, smoking in public, and engaging in a number of high-profile affairs. Celebrated for her writing, Sand also enjoyed painting and drawing, private pastimes that she took up in her later years. Sand’s deep love of Nature manifested in her novels and drawings. In this watercolor, made during one of her walks in the mountainous regions of Auvergne in France, Sand used the chance pooling of pigment to create the ridges of a volcano.“ —Casey Lee, curatorial assistant.
