“Once you’ve put yourself in a painting, you view it very differently" says peter_brathwaite. He saw the #GettyMuseumChallenge to re-create works of art with objects at home as an opportunity to rediscover Black portraiture, explore his own story and honor his black ancestors. He's done more than 15 at this point, with subjects ranging from noblemen of high status to servants portrayed as exotic “accessories.” But rather than precisely imitating the details of each painting, he took liberties that further connected him with his own heritage and empower his subjects.
