The garlands are proudly held by two Cupids (Erotes). These winged youths personify love and desire, and together with the foliage they carry, convey a celebration of life. 2. The face of the Gorgon Medusa is depicted at the center. She had the power to turn those who set eyes on her to stone; her presence here might serve to ward off danger or evils. 3. One of the Cupids stands on top of a sea bull. His counterpart stands on a hippocamp (part fish, part horse), and these fantastical marine creatures suggest a journey over the sea — a common way of imagining death.
