How are you considering your microbes this week? 💡Here's an idea:⠀
⠀
The #AmericanGutProject is one of the largest crowd-sourced citizen science projects in the country. Since 2012, over 11,000 people have mailed anonymized data about their health, disease history, diet, and lifestyle, plus a sample of their poop 💩, to contribute to this massive, ongoing microbiome study.⠀
⠀
One of the most exciting observations released by researchers at Rob Knight's lab: those who eat more than 30 different plant types per week have more diverse gut microbiomes than those who eat 10 or less plant types per week.⠀
⠀
So don't just eat kale salads and call it a day—plants make up about 80% of all biomass on Earth (bacteria clock in second at 13% and humans are barely a rounding error), there's a lot of delicious plants out there for you to explore. 🍅🍆🥑🥦🥒🌶🌽🥕🥔🍠
