We’re proud to introduce Ollie, the world’s second cloned Przewalski’s horse 🐴 Named after SDZWA’s Director of Conservation Genetics Dr. Oliver Ryder, Ollie was born earlier this year to a surrogate mare at the ViaGen Pets & Equine cloning facility in Texas. The two recently arrived at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park where Ollie will learn the language of being a wild horse from his own species. Nearly all of the Przewalski’s horses today descend from 12 born in native habitats. Though they have been reintroduced to the native grasslands of China and Mongolia, scientists believe they’ll need more genetic diversity to secure the future of the species - thus, cloning.
