This little tag can make a big difference for polar bears 🐻‍❄️ Recently, resident polar bear Chinook had a small tracking device applied as part of the Burr on Fur conservation project in collaboration with @polarbearsinternational to test the effectiveness of the tag. The project’s goal is to develop a minimally invasive way of tracking polar bears through small devices that stick to a polar bear’s fur. Through Burr on Fur devices, scientists can understand how and where polar bears use their sea ice habitat and as well as how annual migration between ice and land is changing. They would also grant scientists the ability to follow the movements of adult males and subadult bears, two groups that have not been studied traditionally using collars. When the bear sheds its coat between winter and summer, the Burr on Fur device falls off naturally.
