Cool cam cats: our field cameras recently captured footage of a new melanistic cub at Loisaba Conservancy in Kenya. The sighting confirms the sixth individual black leopard in the study area. We don't know for sure, but we suspect the adult male black leopard may be the father of the cub in the first clip. Our team is working to expand our use of genetic information and hope to better understand the genetic lineage of leopards in Kenya, as well as how many carry the trait of melanism, which is thought to be rare for African leopards. The cameras are part of long-term monitoring of leopard populations in Kenya to determine population numbers and status.
