With only one day until Endangered Species Day, we're highlighting this tree-dwelling marsupial 🐨 At the start of 2020, devastating wildfires tore through Australia and damaged more than 80% of the Greater Blue Mountain World Heritage site. This area is home to the most genetically diverse populations of koalas in the world, so San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance teamed up with researchers to rescue koalas before the fires hit and search for survivors after they passed. Our history of collaborating with Australia’s government dates back to 1925, when the Zoo became an important backup population for koalas. Wildlife care professionals and scientists study koala populations, both at the Zoo and in their Australian habitats, to better understand the species’ complex ecology, mating behaviors, and health.
