Flippin' through Omeo's joey book and feeling grateful for the koality care team and specialists who helped him through his rough beginning. Omeo was the size of a stick of butter and looked more like a featherless cockatoo than a miniature marsupial when his mother passed away. A team of experts stepped in to provide regular bottle feedings, breathing treatments, and extra TLC. The San Diego Zoo has housed and cared for koalas since 1925 and has the largest colony of koalas—as well as the most successful breeding program—outside of Australia. Staff at the Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research are studying koala populations, both at the Zoo and in their Australian habitats, to better understand the species’ complex ecology, mating behaviors and health.
