Our polar bears came to us as orphans. With little to no chance of survival in the wild, we were happy to provide them sanctuary here. Unfortunately, climate change has created a conservation crisis for this iconic species, and their persistence in the wild is jeopardized by record-breaking sea ice losses and increasing industrial-scale human activity. In areas where the sea ice melts completely in the summer, #PolarBears must move ashore. Climate change has extended this ice free-period, and bears may scavenge to avoid starving, or their months-long fast may be extended until ice forms again. This extended time on land can increase the likelihood that bears will be in contact with human settlements; a situation that can be dangerous for both humans and bears. #EndExtinction #sdzoo100
