Strangely white birds? On #WildlifeWednesday? Let's talk about them!
We often get asked about birds with random white feathers - this is known as leucism!
In leucistic birds, some of their plumage lacks melanin pigment, resulting in white feathers (although strangely, this doesn't affect yellow feathers, which retain their colour!)
Albino birds are different, and thought to be rare in the wild. A true albino isn't able to produce melanin pigments at all, which makes them easy to distinguish from their leucistic friends - they are entirely white, and their eyes are *pink*! Sadly, most albino birds die young due to their lack of camouflage and poor eyesight 😢
