It's #MothWeek *and* The Big #ButterflyCount - but how do you tell the difference between the two?! Moths and butterflies belong to the group Lepidoptera, which is made up of around 165,000 species worldwide. In the UK you'll only find 60 butterfly species, and over 2,500 moths! Sadly, there's no obvious answer, but we can dispel some #myths! You can't actually tell solely by 🌈 colour πŸ’‡β€β™€οΈ hairiness β˜€οΈ or time of day! But there is a useful rule of thumb! Moths often have feathery antennae, while #butterflies usually have 'club-shaped' ones. In fact, no butterflies in the UK have feathery antennae! You can see this difference in the photos above πŸ‘€ The final, and possibly saddest difference, is that butterflies get their own emoji, and moths don't πŸ¦‹πŸ˜ If you want to feed your Lepidoptera needs, make sure to follow savebutterflies! πŸ“·Andrew Cooper #Peacock #Butterfly πŸ“· Fabian Harrison #EmperorMoth #Moths
