The National Museum of American History’s Molina Family Latino Gallery, which functioned as the National Museum of the American Latino’s only current physical gallery, has quietly closed its doors for 9 months. The gallery, which will remain closed until spring 2026, was a symbol of progress after decades of advocacy for a museum dedicated to Latino history and had been showing “¡Presente! A Latino History of the United States” since 2022. While Smithsonian officials have said the gallery closed to prepare for its next exhibition “¡Puro Ritmo! The Musical Journey of Salsa,” the decision falls in line with Trump’s pressure on Smithsonian Institutions to promote “unity, progress, and enduring values.”
