Willy Chavarria has finally spoken following the backlash he’s received over his and Adidas’ Oaxaca Slip On from social media users and the Mexican government. The 58-year-old Mexican-American designer said he was “deeply sorry” in a press statement released on Aug. 3: The intention was always to honor the powerful cultural and artistic spirit of Oaxaca and its creative communities — a place whose beauty and resistance have inspired me,” Chavarria wrote in his statement. “I am deeply sorry that the shoe was appropriated in this design and not developed in direct and meaningful partnership with the Oaxacan community. This falls short of the respect and collaborative approach that Oaxaca, the Zapotec community of Villa Hidalgo Yalálag, and its people deserve. #WillyChavarria #Oaxaca #Mexico #Huaraches #Michoacan #MexicanCulture #IndigenousCulture #ChicanoDesigner #Adidas #OaxacaSlipOn #CulturalAppropriation #IndigenousMexicans #Yalalag #ArtesaniaIndigena #ClaudiaSheinbaum #SalomonJara...
