At the Berkeley City Council’s regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 9, the council will vote on an ordinance that would codify its status as a sanctuary city into its municipal code. If approved, the proposed ordinance would prohibit city officials from disclosing “protected personal information” to federal immigration enforcement, among other rules, according to the proposal. In January 2025, the city reaffirmed its sanctuary status and created a task force.
