Archaeologists have announced the discovery of the 3,500-year-old city of Peñico, located in Peru’s northern Barranca province. Located about 200km (124 miles) north of Lima, the city is believed to have been founded between 1,800 and 1,500 BC and served as a key trading hub connecting early Indigenous communities living in the Pacific coast with those living in the Andes mountains and Amazon basin. According to researchers, the discovery sheds light on what may have happened to the Caral, the oldest civilization in the Americas.
