Farmworkers are taking a stand against the Trump administration’s immigration policies with “Huelga para la dignidad,” or Strike for Dignity, a grassroots-led labor strike from July 16 to 18 in California. Planned by undocumented farmworkers and community leaders, the strike calls for an end to ICE raids and deportations, an immediate and direct path to citizenship, and legal protections for undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.
Days before the strike’s announcement, a federal judge in LA issued a temporary order blocking ICE from conducting raids without reasonable suspicion following an incident in Camarillo that led to the death of Jaime Alanís Garcia, a farmworker who fell from the roof of a greenhouse during an ICE raid. On the GoFundMe page set up to cover medical and funeral costs, Garcia’s family wrote in a statement that he “was not just a farmworker” but also “a human being who deserved dignity.”
