World-famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo was born on this day in 1907 in Coyoacán, Mexico. Famous for her surrealist artwork and self-portraits, she is considered to be one of the greatest Mexican artists of all time.⁠ As a disabled, queer feminist, Kahlo is known for her breaking through societal standards & gender roles as a person and an artist. Her popularity endured following her death in 1954. She made history in 2021 when her 1949 painting, “Diego y Yo,” was auctioned for $34.9 million at a Sotheby’s in New York City, making it the most expensive work sold by a Latin American artist at auction.
