Willy Chavarria is one of the most well-known Latino designers in the fashion world with his collections that pay homage to Chicano fashion and culture and his dedication to uplifting his own and other marginalized communities. Hailing from the agricultural community of Huron, California, the 58-year-old queer Mexican-American designer was heavily inspired by the immigrants he grew up around in his youth and remembers sketching in Dollar Store notebooks through his youth, leading him to eventually work with legendary brands like Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Adidas. Through his label, which he launched in 2015, he hopes to platform Chicano culture and fashion and make space for authenticity and other Latinx designers in the future:
“Fashion has to be wearable and relatable, even if it challenges silhouettes… Lowrider culture, biker culture, it’s all part of who I am,” Chavarria told Forbes in January. “It’s about taking what’s been overlooked or misunderstood and showing its beauty....
