New York’s iconic Caribbean Social Club, known affectionately as Toñita’s, is coming up on its 50th anniversary. For generations, the venue in Brooklyn has been a hub for Puerto Rican culture and a place where Boricuas can come and drink beer, play pool and dominoes, eat food, and build community. Now, Maria Antonia “Toñita” Cay and La Gesta Inc., a non-profit that empowers New York’s Latinx community, will be putting on Toñita Fest, an event meant to honor Toñita’s life work and the preservation of the community space. Through a GoFundMe page, La Gesta Inc. is asking the community to give back to the venue and its years of service by financially supporting the event.
