Two have died and 22 have been injured after a Mexican Navy ship struck the Brooklyn Bridge in New York on Saturday, May 17. According to NYPD and city officials, a mechanical issue caused the Cuauhtémoc vessel, which was carrying 277 passengers, to lose power and control of the rudder, and the river moved the ship in the wrong direction and caused the collision. The two crew members killed in the incident were 20-year-old Navy cadet América Yamilet Sánchez and 23-year-old sailor Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos. Mexican government officials have lamented the incident, including President Claudia Sheinbaum:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of two crew members of the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship, who lost their lives in the unfortunate accident in New York Harbor. Our sympathy and support go out to their families,” Sheinbaum wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
