Trailblazer Angie Xtravaganza was a trans Puerto Rican performer and house mother beloved in the NYC ballroom scene. Born in New York City in 1964, from an early age, she found a purpose helping others in her community. As young as 13 years old, she helped take care of children who had been rejected by their families for being their authentic selves, providing a safe haven despite battling discrimination herself. She became known in her community as a figure in ballroom culture. She, alongside Hector Xtravaganza, established the House of Xtravaganza–the first mainly Latinx house in the ballroom scene. Under her leadership, her house gained a good reputation, winning trophies and gaining recognition—Xtravaganza herself earning “Mother of the Year", which was featured in the 1991 documentary “Paris is Burning”. She was also diagnosed with AIDS that year and died alone in 1993 at the age of 28.
