Have you ever heard Quechua hip-hop? For centuries, the Andean people of Peru have faced racism, discrimination, and violent oppression for speaking Quechua, the language of the Inca empire and most widely-spoken Indigenous language in the Americas. Indigenous Peruvian rapper Renata Flores Rivera, known by fans as “Peru’s Queen of Quechua Rap,” aims to not only keep their language and culture alive, but also give it new life through her music.
“I wanted to reflect the stories of these historical Andean women onto the Andean women of our generation. I was trying to portray what we women used to be like and what we are now,” she said in an interview with Remezcla.
