Rachel Zegler, who is of Colombian heritage, recently opened up in an interview with Allure magazine about being questioned over her Latinidad by white studio executives during the casting process of “West Side Story”—where she played the lead of Maria, a Latina character. For the 2021 remake, the studio wanted to ensure the role of a Puerto Rican character would be played by a Latina actress. This, however, was not the last time the actress would be questioned over casting, as parts of the internet have also reacted negatively to her casting in “Snow White”, a non-Latina character.
