Did you know the border wall also affects the migration of monarch butterflies? Every spring, monarch butterflies begin their multi-generational migration journey, flying nearly 3,000 miles from oyamel fir forests in Mexico to lay their eggs on prostrate milkweed plants in Texas and continue their migration further north, even reaching parts of southern Canada. Ahead of this March 2025 migration, many have pointed out that the U.S.-Mexico border wall is contributing to the destruction and loss of milkweed, which was listed as an endangered plant species by the federal government in 2023 and is an essential component of monarch butterflies’ migration and reproduction process.
