🇧🇷 Celebrating Brazil's first Black female novelist. Maria Firmina Dos Reis was a trailblazer in Afro-Brazilian literature, being the author behind the first abolitionist novel in Brazil written by a woman, “Úrsula” in 1859. Published decades before other Brazilian abolitionist novels, “Ursula” gives a nuanced portrayal of enslaved African and Afro-Brazilian characters. The novel follows Úrsula, the plantation owner’s daughter and her romance with Tancredo. The story highlights the narratives of enslaved Africans Tulio, Susana, and Antero who speak of the horrors of the Middle Passage, the abuse and degradation they face on a daily basis, and the brutality of their masters. #MariaFirminaDosReis #Ursula #AfroBrazilian #Brazil #Latina #AfroLatina #WomensHistoryMonth #Brasilera #BlackWomenWriters #Poderosa #HistoryMade #LatinaPower
