The Trump administration has now rebranded the CBP One app, which allowed people at the southern border to apply for asylum in the U.S. or begin the immigration process, as “CBP Home” and announced that it is now a platform for “self-deportation.” Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said that the app is meant to give them an option to “return legally in the future and live the American Dream”, adding “If they don’t, we will find them, we will deport them, and they will never return.”
In response to this revamp, immigrant advocacy groups are criticizing this latest move by the Trump administration as yet another attempt to instill fear among those seeking asylum.
“The Trump administration’s approach of ‘self-deportation’ will only add chaos and cruelty to an already broken system,” Vanessa Cárdenas, executive director of the immigrant advocacy group America’s Voice, said in a statement.
