Latina unsung heroes are those who’ve made significant contributions throughout history without receiving the recognition they deserve. Afro-Argentinian María Remedios del Valle, also known as “capitana” and “Madre de la Patria”, was a military nurse and heroine during the Argentinian Wars of Independence (1810-1818). In July 1810, Del Valle enlisted herself and her family. After defying gender norms and the orders of General Manuel Belgrano, she tended to wounded soldiers during the battle of Tucumán in 1812. After this, she was named a captain of the army. During the battle of Avohuma, she was wounded and captured by the Spanish. During her time in prison, she helped fellow patriot soldiers and commanders escape. She was eventually able to escape the custody of the Spanish and flee. She tragically lost her husband and children as a result of the war and still returned to the army, where she continued tending to the wounded soldiers in battle.
